It’s easy to make Homemade Marshmallows. Let me show you how!
Making homemade marshmallows is a project you’re going to want to try one of these days. It’s a recipe that’s especially fun to do with kids (since they think marshmallows just come in a package!) And then you can make some homemade, decadent hot chocolate so you can add your marshmallows to it and enjoy a double whammy treat!
🛒 Ingredients Needed:
- cold water
- powdered gelatin
- granulated white sugar
- corn syrup
- tap water
- salt
- vanilla beans
- powdered sugar
- cornstarch

In a small bowl, combine the cold water with the powdered gelatin; set aside.

To a saucepan, add the sugar, corn syrup, water and salt. Stir and heat over medium-high heat until the mixture reaches 235℉ on a candy thermometer (should take 6 to 8 minutes).

In a large bowl, combine the corn syrup mixture, gelatin mixture and the seeds from the 2 vanilla beans. Use a mixer to beat until thick- about 6 minutes.

In a small bowl, combine the powdered sugar and cornstarch. Sprinkle half of this mixture in an 8-inch square pan. Spread the marshmallow mixture in the pan with a buttered spatula, and then sprinkle the remaining cornstarch mixture on top. Let the marshmallows dry overnight.
Then slice into squares (5×5 to make 25 marshmallows).
➡️ Tips and Substitutions:
- Add in ½ teaspoon of peppermint extract and a drop or two of red food coloring to create pink peppermint marshmallows.
- Use other colors of food coloring for some different colored marshmallows.
- Use small oiled cookie cutters to cut them into shapes such as hearts or stars.
- Dip them in chocolate to create chocolate-covered marshmallows.
- Use for hot chocolate, s’mores or munching on their own!

Store homemade marshmallows layered between sheets of wax or parchment paper in an airtight container. If kept in a dry place at a cool room temperature, they should keep for about a month.
